18th of June SUNDAY - Mable and Co

Sunday the 18th was a terrific day. We went to church with George and Uncle Roy at the Wakefield Baptist Church and had lunch back at the "ranch".We then planned to go back to the boat to get more stuff . Things like Gary's work clothes etc. On the way however we ran into a little trouble. The truck died and we had to pull off the road. Keep in mind that we just got through a leaking (like a sieve) transmission fluid line. The thing just rusted off. I wish they made American vehicles to last longer. After all it only has 203,000 + miles on it. Getting back to our story. ..... So there we sit on the side of a residential street with the hood up. Finally Gary gave me the ok to call AAA at 10 till 8, it was still light out. Gary paced around the truck while I sat and read. Eddie didn't show any concern at all. Well we waited and waited ..............and waited some more.
During this time Mable and Martha(mother and daughter) where out for their evening constitution. I think it was Martha that started idle chat about cars breaking down and that was the open door. They both talked slowly almost with a hint of mental disability. Gary charmed them for a few minutes and then I got out to be polite. It came out that Mable has a car for sale right around the corner!!!...and they were only asking 800.00!! OBO. So thinking that this must be a message from God I go for a walk with Martha to their house to check out the car. Mable stayed with Gary and kept him distracted anyway. It was about a 10 minute walk to their house and there sat a good looking older model car.....a Pontiac Bonneville, white. Martha went up to the house and asked "Dad" for the keys and we were off. I drove right to Gary to let him inspect it. I stayed in the car and Mable and Martha stuck their heads under the hood with Gary and chatted the whole time. They talked about how the car always made "that" noise (a horrible grinding squeal) and their mechanic lived right around the corner to attest to the fact that its always made "that" noise. Gary glared over the top of the open hood, concealing his silent message to me from the two car owners. Gary's message,"Get this piece of *&^% out of here and take these woman with you. " Okay then. Next issue discussedwas how to get the car back to the house. The two woman went back and forth "Mom you drive it and I'll walk or maybe we should both drive it back and then we'll walk down such and such street to finish our walk"....................finally I got in the car and drove away. I left the three of them standing there watching me go. I quickly drove back to their house, backed the car into its original spot and then hightailed it back to Gary. When I got there another car had stopped and there was another woman standing there. Matilda, another family member with large teeth and equally large bags under her eyes were just mesmerized by Gary's quick wit and I didn't know how I was gonna get rid of all of them. After handing the keys back ........it hit me. I said," Hmmm its getting dark fast Huh." They all agreed....and stood. A few minutes later I said with both hands at my shoulders palms up," Ooooo did you feel that ? I think its starting to rain!!" That got Mable's attention but still they stood..........it was almost dark by this time. Next I tried the "Getting pretty dark isn't it?" routine, still they stood. Then standing in almost complete darkness and after listening to many endearing family history stories I started to slap the mosquitoes away. FINALLY it was the bugs that broke up the party. At 10"o'clock a woman came out of the house that we were parked in front of to walk her puppy. I got out of the truck , appologized for any inconvenience our broken down truck might be causing and explained that a tow truck was coming shortly(shortly!! we waited 2 and 1/2 hours!!) The woman was very nice and was about to come over and chat when a car pulled up. It was ..........Mable and Martha with "Dad" in the back seat!! Mable explained that she never got our number and offered us a ride to the boat (it would have been a tight squeeze next to "Dad). I couldn't believe it. I went over to Gary sitting in the truck ......absolutely beside himself for waiting on this tow truck..... and told him of Mables offer. Needless to say he said thank them and get rid of them. I went back to Mable , thanked her for her generous offer and told her she wouldn't be needing our number because if we wanted the car we had her number and would call her. Three times I had to rebuff their insistance (with "Dad" calling over the back seat) that we call their machanic right now and he'll testify that, that noise is typical of Pontiac Bonneville's!! Finally I said thanks again for everything, But you won't need our number because we've decided that we don't want the car...........bub eye!! and I walked away. Leaving Mable and co dumbstruck. They finally drove away after a few minuutes.

Thankfully at 10:30 a roll back pulls up and a real nice guy was driving........Chris. He drove us home and put the truck right into the garage so we wouldn't have to push the truck up the ramps. He really knew what he was doing.

Keep us in your prayers, your in ours
