May 1st ! ! and 2nd May FLIES and Duplin Creek

My GOSH these flies are ravenous! We motored all day Monday and Tuesday with these flies following us, landing on the screens trying to get in. When they did get in they'd bite and draw blood. OUCH. So we stayed inside, or up on the "fly"bridge.....good thing it was so cool out. The noseeums are only around when its perfect for us. Too cold! no noseeums.........Too hot? no noseeums GRRR. I stood outside to do dishes and straighten out the deck. A good portion of my time was killing flies. I took out 40 + flies.
Last night we anchored in Duplin River behind Sapelo Island. Blackbeard Island is in front of that.
Took Eddie to shore at Marsh Landing where the ferry lands. Not too many of those green biting flies.
The walk to the University of Georgia Marine Institute has an interesting fountain that looks like a giant turkey. I've heard it's quite a walk. I didn't go. Ian was kind enough to run me and Eddie to shore, don't want to keep him waiting.

UPDATE & NEWS: Gary spoke to Jean Marc today and told us:
Jean Marc, Ray & Heather (Sea Holly) ,and Ray & Patti are sitting on the Whisper having cocktails when a MAYDAY comes over the radio. They all got hung up 3 days with weather waiting to get across the Abermarle Sound. Anyway, a 45 footer had problems in the Abermarle Sound and sent out a MAYDAY. Seems they were in 5 to 7 foot seas and the laminate let go on the hull. The boat sank so fast they didn't even have time to get the outboard motor on. So this guy sends out a mayday on his handheld and its not sending a strong enough signal to reach the Coast Guard clearly. So I don't know exactly who was on the radio but they(everyone on the WHISPER) participated in an SOS relay. This means that for one reason or another the radio transmition doesn't reach the party intended. So a boat (WHISPER) in this case) relays the message to the coast guard or vice versa. So they relay the message and the coast guard dispatches a helicopter and everyone on the sunken boat survived and are all ok.
We'll be toasting to the hero's tonight. They'll be in Deltaville in the next couple of days.
Bill and Leona (Voyageur C) are gonna be laid up in Charlestown SC for a few days. Bill got his finger caught in the windlass and should have gone for stitches. Unfortunately he'll have to see a Dr now. Don't feel bad Bill , I did the same thing and my finger still hurts from injuring it in the middle of Feb. You just wait thinking it'll get better.
Right now at 11:16 AM we are in Johnson Creek. Tonight we'll be anchoring in Herb River.
Earlier this evening , when we first anchored up, two guys were fishing close by. They had a bucket full of trout. So I decide to give it a shot and throw a pole out. They came by and had pity on me. One guy gave me some live shrimp bait and the other gave me a beautiful spotted trout. I had offered to buy one but they'd have none of it.
At about 6 we got the call that cocktails were on the Veritas. I cooked up the fish in the oven. Did it real simple with garlic, onions, olive oil and some OLD BAY blackened seasoning. It was fresh and delicious. Tony and Judy from the Nor Wester II especially enjoyed it.
After we headed back to the boat Gary and I decided to try our hand at fishing again. We took the shrimp and the dinghy over to the shore. Aside from feeding the noseeums we had no luck.I just talked to my brother Mike and filled him in on our updates. Gary took the phone and talked for a while.
Its 9:06 and I can't believe I'm still awake.
Keep us in your prayers, your in ours
