Monday February 6th OOOP'S......not again?!
Well grace strikes again. It was Thursday evening about 8:30 and it was dark. The tide had gone
out which means that the boat sits very low in the water, far below dock height. I decided to go
take a shower up at the shower/laundry building about 300 yards away. I climbed up the ladder on the boat, left hand on the ladder and my car keys in the right. Stepping off I missjudged (vision
is one of the first things to go "they" say). Before I could curse, everything went dark and warm. I always thought that if I fell in this dark murky water it would be cold, but it wasn't. On entry, I narrowly missed the jagged barnacles growing on the pylons (sp?). Friends here said I was lucky I didn't get shredded as I fell. Anyway, as I processed what happened I tried to orient myself and find which way was up. I started kicking for the surface. I consider myself to be a pretty good swimmer, but I found it difficult to make any progress. It was because I was fully dressed... including sneakers, jeans, and a couple of layers including a sweatshirt. As I struggled to head toward the surface, I could hear Gary's muffled voice yelling, "Come up!! Come up!!" His finger tips were reaching for me and made initial contact just under my chin. Then he got ahold of my clothes, then an arm and pulled with all his might. As I broke the surface I threw my right arm straight up and declared, "Look, I never dropped the keys!" There was no way I was gonna pull myself up over the side of the boat. I tried to help, but I just had too much heavy clothes on. As Gary struggled to pull me onboard I could hear him yelling, "Give me your leg! Get your "#%&" on this boat! !" He dragged me up using my jeans as a handle. I didn't panic until just my right leg was dangling in the water. My imagination envisioned an alligator or a shark taking off my foot and I yelled a couple of times, "Get me out!! Get me out!!" Which he did........my hero :) After resting on the gunnel for a minute Gary walked me over to sit down and immediately started taking my shoes off etc... I was never once cold.
What happened was my right leg finding no footing.... swung down, throwing me totally overextended and off balance. As I fell, the inside of my left leg caught the gunnel slamming
hard. The bruise is huge and quite colorful. My right hand made contact with the dock and my right ring finger still won't bend yet. My lower back dragged over the old wooden dock leaving some large, red telltale scratches. All in all.........we're fine now.
