18th of June SUNDAY - Mable and Co

Sunday the 18th was a terrific day. We went to church with George and Uncle Roy at the Wakefield Baptist Church and had lunch back at the "ranch".We then planned to go back to the boat to get more stuff . Things like Gary's work clothes etc. On the way however we ran into a little trouble. The truck died and we had to pull off the road. Keep in mind that we just got through a leaking (like a sieve) transmission fluid line. The thing just rusted off. I wish they made American vehicles to last longer. After all it only has 203,000 + miles on it. Getting back to our story. ..... So there we sit on the side of a residential street with the hood up. Finally Gary gave me the ok to call AAA at 10 till 8, it was still light out. Gary paced around the truck while I sat and read. Eddie didn't show any concern at all. Well we waited and waited ..............and waited some more.
During this time Mable and Martha(mother and daughter) where out for their evening constitution. I think it was Martha that started idle chat about cars breaking down and that was the open door. They both talked slowly almost with a hint of mental disability. Gary charmed them for a few minutes and then I got out to be polite. It came out that Mable has a car for sale right around the corner!!!...and they were only asking 800.00!! OBO. So thinking that this must be a message from God I go for a walk with Martha to their house to check out the car. Mable stayed with Gary and kept him distracted anyway. It was about a 10 minute walk to their house and there sat a good looking older model car.....a Pontiac Bonneville, white. Martha went up to the house and asked "Dad" for the keys and we were off. I drove right to Gary to let him inspect it. I stayed in the car and Mable and Martha stuck their heads under the hood with Gary and chatted the whole time. They talked about how the car always made "that" noise (a horrible grinding squeal) and their mechanic lived right around the corner to attest to the fact that its always made "that" noise. Gary glared over the top of the open hood, concealing his silent message to me from the two car owners. Gary's message,"Get this piece of *&^% out of here and take these woman with you. " Okay then. Next issue discussedwas how to get the car back to the house. The two woman went back and forth "Mom you drive it and I'll walk or maybe we should both drive it back and then we'll walk down such and such street to finish our walk"....................finally I got in the car and drove away. I left the three of them standing there watching me go. I quickly drove back to their house, backed the car into its original spot and then hightailed it back to Gary. When I got there another car had stopped and there was another woman standing there. Matilda, another family member with large teeth and equally large bags under her eyes were just mesmerized by Gary's quick wit and I didn't know how I was gonna get rid of all of them. After handing the keys back ........it hit me. I said," Hmmm its getting dark fast Huh." They all agreed....and stood. A few minutes later I said with both hands at my shoulders palms up," Ooooo did you feel that ? I think its starting to rain!!" That got Mable's attention but still they stood..........it was almost dark by this time. Next I tried the "Getting pretty dark isn't it?" routine, still they stood. Then standing in almost complete darkness and after listening to many endearing family history stories I started to slap the mosquitoes away. FINALLY it was the bugs that broke up the party. At 10"o'clock a woman came out of the house that we were parked in front of to walk her puppy. I got out of the truck , appologized for any inconvenience our broken down truck might be causing and explained that a tow truck was coming shortly(shortly!! we waited 2 and 1/2 hours!!) The woman was very nice and was about to come over and chat when a car pulled up. It was ..........Mable and Martha with "Dad" in the back seat!! Mable explained that she never got our number and offered us a ride to the boat (it would have been a tight squeeze next to "Dad). I couldn't believe it. I went over to Gary sitting in the truck ......absolutely beside himself for waiting on this tow truck..... and told him of Mables offer. Needless to say he said thank them and get rid of them. I went back to Mable , thanked her for her generous offer and told her she wouldn't be needing our number because if we wanted the car we had her number and would call her. Three times I had to rebuff their insistance (with "Dad" calling over the back seat) that we call their machanic right now and he'll testify that, that noise is typical of Pontiac Bonneville's!! Finally I said thanks again for everything, But you won't need our number because we've decided that we don't want the car...........bub eye!! and I walked away. Leaving Mable and co dumbstruck. They finally drove away after a few minuutes.

Thankfully at 10:30 a roll back pulls up and a real nice guy was driving........Chris. He drove us home and put the truck right into the garage so we wouldn't have to push the truck up the ramps. He really knew what he was doing.

15th of June - destination Pt Judith RI

PICS:
Whats left of the old Jamestown Bridge

It was cold when we pulled in to the Narragansett Bay, note the two pics of Gary and I bundled up

Random lighthouse

stadium near NY airport (names later when Gary can give me them)

Gary and I woke up at 3:20 this morning as the rain started. I got up and covered the electronics in case we had a leak (in case?!) . Then Gary got up and put the computer on to check the weather and see if any changes had taken place. The forecaster said "light rain" and thats what we got....... mixed in with the downpour. We did go back to bed, but when Gary started moving around again at 5:30 I guessed that he was antsy to get going. After almost 20 years together I'm a clever guesser. We're concerned about getting weather stuck a day from home. So we are on the road again.....early ......very early.

We traveled all day in typical New England style. It was gray and raw out.

Stats: We arrived this Thursday afternoon to friends and family waving from shore.

So .......here we are. It's been an amazing trip. It was sometimes uncomfortable, inconvenient, downright painful and even boring. Other times we saw things that you could only witness from a boat. We've watched dolphins by the score, huge schools of fish, sharks meander under the boat, alligators wait and birds of many exotic types fly over our bow. But the best thing I've witnessed was how people from all walks of life and social class worked together, supported one another and broke bread at the end of the day. So many wonderful people. Sometimes we helped them and in turn the experience helped us become better human beings. We also met wonderful people through sharing our blog. You've laughed at our foolishness, got scared for us at times, and supported us through out. Thank you so much.

Gary wants me to continue blogging. I feel that this trip deserves a blog by itself. Perhaps I'll start another separate blog and do family update kinda things. I haven't decided. I may just enter a post every once in a while, yeah that sounds right.

The VICTORIA is an old wood boat that will be a part of our family forever through the time spent and experiences we've had on her. We'll continue to patch and repair her till it is no longer prudent. But that sad time hasn't come yet . We praise God for allowing us to take this trip, for walking beside us and watching over us when we got in trouble or hurt and for whispering in Garys ear telling him to either travel or wait. Thank you Lord for providing us with a safe passage home.

We're HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO AMANDA(our oldest daughter) AND WAYNE ON THEIR NEW ADDITION TO THE FAMILY EXPECTED IN FEBRUARY ! ! ! ! !

After conquering Hells Gate and anchoring in the Bronx we left a bumpy anchorage in City Island. We were underway by 7:30 am. We passed barges, debri fields (logs floating etc) and fishing boats... but all in all we were alone on the water today. We didn't see any other cruisers. The weather forecasts are consistently inaccurate and we've grown accustomed to accomadating them. If they tell us 1-2 foot waves we look for 2-4. If they tell us winds N 5-10 knots we hope for that and expect SE 10-to 15. Especially true when water is shallow. There was hardly any land in view so our electronics were relied upon heavily. We motored all day in the gray, cold, raw weather that is home. Oh goody. We are now sitting in fog which is quickly closing in like a familiar blanket. On one hand it is exciting (especially through Brittany's eye's) to get home and back to things that are safe and consistent. On the other hand Gary and I are already talking about our next adventure. As for Gary and I.................we will go home,....... and work........ and plan ............prepare...........make changes.......and save , yes definately SAVE......till we do "it" again. I mentioned at one point today that the blog seemed to be ending in an anticlimactic way. Gary said "Please, lets hope the blog ends anticlimactically" I just laughed and continued reading to him from "CHESAPEAKE" a book we both highly recommend. We have one more night and we'll spend it here in Old Saybrook. We're rocking gently back and forth due to the wake of fishing boats going home late. It could also be the fact that we're basically anchored in the stinkin ocean!!! but I digress.... Brittany is down below giggling on the phone with friends. I hope that the seed we've planted in Brittany will make her thirst for adventure, never accept the status quo, ...to think outside the box and have the confidence to go after the passions in her life. Until tomorrow...........

To Bill and Leona..on Voyageur C......Welcome home (they made it home Wed the 14th-at last)

VIRUS NOTICE DO NOT OPEN...............

an email from us or anyone if the subject line is:

New Graphics site...................its a virus

I'm dealing with it now. the following is partially an excerpt from someone
that sent me the info.
Unfortunately I had already opened one.

This Yahoo worm/virus has caused a lot of grief mostly for YAHOO users.

Once someone has opened the infected YAHOO email, this worm propagates throughout
their email addresses and redistributes the worm under the premise that
the person you know sent it. It's not their fault and unless they clean their
system, this method of infection will repeat itself.

If you have the time, a courtesy email to that person / whoever sent it
advising them that they are infected would be a nice gesture..

SO if you get an email from me with this in the subject line please CALL me
It looks like its a YAHOO groups and YAHOO email issue

Glimmerglass visitor, Rick

Manmade rocks in the Manasquan inlet

SKIMMER a cool looking boat coming in full of clams

Starboard side view of what I woke up to this am.....beautiful

Hasty wakers lookin to fish.......as soon as we got in the channel, we had to wait for traffic!

We left the anchorage and got through the Glimmerglass bridge (as soon as I find the pic I'll post it-interesting bridge-very old) for the 9:00 opening. Today there is some tension regarding the Hells Gate timing. We had this last time to and it went very well. Pray it turns out as well for us this time. Anyway as we left the Glimmerglass the bridge tender wished us Godspeed and a safe journey. As we passed through the old cable bridge she groaned and squeeked until the bridge was up. Then we headed out to the channel. We had to slow our 4 knots down a bit to let the traffic go by! All these mad fishermen in a hurry to ............go fishing. Okay...........then when we got to the inlet they all had to slow down anyway because the current was tough. It slowed everyone down. The Manasquan inlet reminded me of Pt Judith RI near George's Restaurant(if it's still there?!) . Soon the Pt Judith inlet will remind me of the Manesquan..........WOO HOO

Today is our first day without the protection of the ICW. It's a little disconcerting. Off the shoreof NJ with the faint skyline of NY in front of us we spotted our first Bottlenose dolpin since Delaware Bay. Gary saw that one. But I got a look at these two beauties swimming effortlessly together. I love em. It's a beautiful day to travel. We have a great expanse of water in front of us. Hanging from left to right in front of us is a thick cloud of smog that lays heavy near the water, with blue skies above. The boat is gently rocking left to right with the ocean swells. Nothing really to speak of.

Because you need to time your passage through Hells Gate were only doing 5 knots (about 6mph) .

As we get closer to NY there is more barge traffic for sure. Well the anxiety was flowing today as we anticipated Hells Gate. Once again Gary consulted with a professional (thanks Tom) and we got through it without incident.

Right after passing under the Throgs neck bridge we made a left and motored to City Island NY, where we set anchor for the night. We're bushed. Stress will do that to you. More on that tomorrow.

NOTE: Diane.........just wanted to let you know that Eddie did pee pee on the puppy pad today!!
Right when we were going through Hells Gate he started to shiver and whine. So I took him downstairs and tied him in the corner of the stern with a puppy pad. He was such a good boy!!
:) Oh and he got a bath today too! Tomorrow..............Misty's turn.

Weather is looking great for most of the week. Its 7:07 am and we are preparing to get underway. But first a hot cup of tea.

We motored over to the gas dock first thing this am only to find it was full of VIKING boats needing to be pulled out of, or put in to, the water. So while we waited Capt.(Cigar) Bob came by to see us off which was very nice and Capt (duck)Bob walked down to the end of Allens Dock to wave us a safe trip. The next thing we new Bob and Maureen(she's the painter of the award winning ducks) were in the PUFFIN standing to. They wanted to escort us out to the bay. Good thing to. I forgot the Viking bathroom key in my shower bag. We put the key into a ziplock and Brittany made a great throw over to the PUFFIN. I wonder how much they would have charged us for that one. Bob commented on how we seem to be having a problem with bathroom keys. An astute observation.

Gary started driving from up top but that has proven too raw, rainy and cold.

Its 12:15 and we are passing through the Manahawkin Bay, just on the other side of Surf City, NJ

At 12:38 if we had any doubts as to where we were its all clear to us now .............NJ. We just got waked a good one and they were so close that we had nowhere to go in the narrow channel. I jumped up to grab the random coffee mug and Gary's new coffee press and smashed the heel of my foot in the process. Thats the 3rd injury of the day. First was my right hip banging into the bathroom door knob as the boat shifted, then as I was bringing Eddie down the ladder from upstairs I smashed my knee. You'd think that I didn't get enough sleep last night but I can't even blame it on that. The worst casualtywas the new picture that Bill n Diane gave us. Thankfully its just the glass, the picture and the frame are fine. Now where to put it ...........

Our depth sounder is bouncing around 5 and 6 feet (+2 feet under the hull) Wanted to go to Sandy Hook but at 3:15 and 30 miles to go we'd get in around dark at 8:00 (boaters midnight). Looks like Manesquan is it. Specifically The Glimmer Glass in Crabtown Creek. (mile 0.8 in Skipper Bob) rated (333433....with an anchor and a doggie) explanation later.

At 4:07 we saw the bridge (on page 15... Skipper Bob 6.3)open and close for no apparant reason.
We can no longer trust our chart plotter for tides. It worked out today though. We had the tide push us along the Pt Pleasant Canal and that was great, we thought we'd be fighting it.

As we're going under one bridge I can hear the automobile traffic overhead and taking a picture of the Briele RR bridge. More pics later.

below is the weather forecast that we are looking at

Yeah, yeah we know about the hurricane, we'll be home by then....................... Some our friends will be in the thick of it. God Bless em and keep them safe.

Miss you France.......and Ian :)

10th and 11th of June New Gretna NJ

Left over from Fri.:
Gary got rid of the oil for 3 oil changes (thats big). I washed the boat and scrubbed the bow rail. While looking through Gary's shower bag he found the $150.00 key from UTSCH'S Marina in Cape May. He phoned the marina and let them know that it would be in the mail Saturday. Which it was. Brittany was invited to sleep over on the Sea Spirit and watch movies. She loved the idea and Gary and I had our first night alone in a long time.

Saturday: We slept in and then walked over to Allens Dock. People started gongregating by the Sea Spirit and a bit of a party ensued. We took a couple of trips over to the VICTORIA to give tours and introduce some of the animal lovers in the crowd to Eddie and Misty. As the evening passed, others came by and played the guitar for us as we sat around and sang a few little rock and roll dittys. Then the hosts with the most, fed us a fabulous dinner of beef loin that had been cut into steaks & baked potatoes.MMMMMMM then we went home and hit the rack.

Sunday: There isn't a church close by so that didn't happen today. Instead I made eggs and roast beef hash in my new electric fry pan!! I called Diane and Bill and invited them over. They had already made up some sausages and home fries. So I suggested that they bring it with em so we could eat together. That's what we did. Delicious. Gary went for a grocery run with B n Diane and now we'll prepare for dinner together. Wayne and Patti took some folks out for a slow boat ride on the Bum's Rest. They invited us but we replied that we've been on a slow boat ride for 9 months. Thanks anyway. :) We'll probably use the marina grill up at the gazebo. If anything interesting happens I'll let you know.

Oh, one more thing, some have brought it to my attention that accessing the archives is an issue. So I've contacted blogger and asked for assistance. I'll let you know about that to.

Next stop Manasquam .........maybe

Reunited with Bill n Diane in New Gretna

We pulled in to the VIKING Yachting Center Marina on Friday afternoon. It was blowing a little and the VICTORIA was a bear to maneuver in the tight space between one sneaker type and the other. The washing of our dirty boat commenced and all the usual stuff, once we hit a dock. I use the word "hit" figuratively speaking. I read some more of "Chesapeake" and then around 3 Bill and Diane showed up with a cooler full of food and a new electric fry pan!! She had called me yesterday and asked for a list of things we could use (like I said in an earlier post). But the electric fry pan !! Its a beauty to. We stood around and chatted for a while and then it started to rain. Diane wanted to get back to the Sea Spirit to close the hatches, so off we went. It turned into a downpour with hail and everything. Diane said,"Hail Hail the Thompsons have arrived!!"

While waiting for a break in the weather to go to dinner we visited over at the Sea Spirit and a friend of theirs came by. Bob Olsen is a local artist who has made it big in the ornamental duck arena. It started off years ago when he and his wife were invited to a Christmas party. The host had asked for guests to bring a hand made item for the swap. Bob picked up a piece of wood and carved a little duck. His wife said that it was so nice she wanted to keep it and ended up bringing something else. Now keep in mind I'm an amateur photographer so the presentation of these AMAZING pieces of art isn't how I think they should be presented. They actually feel like textured feathers. The wood Bob uses is very light weight and the tools he uses are quite intricate. It takes many hours for 1 duck to be completed. The end product has won him quite a few prizes and awards! I hope these picks do them justice. If your interested in aquiring one of these one of a kind piece's to add to your home decor you can contact Bob at :

For those of you who follow our daily exploits, remember back to Great Bridge. The parade of boats that went past us while we were docked at that bulkhead are to numerous to mention. Some stand out more than others. One little boat that caught my eye resembled the Victoria (to me) so I took a couple of shots of her as she went by.

Later in Cape May I noticed the boat the "Helen J" tied up at UTSCH'S! I stopped to chat later in the evening and met Lee. A nice guy who(from our conversation) seemed to know alot about boats. He liked the lines of the VICTORIA and mentioned that he wouild like to chat with Gary and maybe see the boat up close. I said Gary always likes talking boats and for him to come by any time. Gary liked him right away and during the course of conversation we found out that Lee was no other than Lee Wilbur of Wilbur Yachts in Maine. Check out his website to see some of his work.

http://www.wilburyachts.com/

So in my last post I dedicated it to the Coast Guard and their early morning visit. That was this morning. All day we've had visitors. Gnats. First thing this morning when Magali's crew and us were getting ready to leave the sanctuary of UTSCH's they were annoying. Early afternoon they were ravenous. Now they are just too horrible to describe, but I'll try. For one thing we'd been following a low tide throughout the morning. All the mud and gook was exposed so we expected bugs. After all its spring and things are warming up etc. As we passed through Great Egg Harbor inlet Gary slowed the boat down and asked me to drive while he went downstairs while he figured something out. So there I am in long pants, T shirt with a red windbraker all zipped up, hood on, baseball cap on top of that and sunglasses . Well as the boat slowed and Gary descended the stairs the wind slowed and all the gnats that were looking for an opportunity for a meal found it. I was swarmed. If I haven't mentioned the "African Queen" before I'll mention it here. I'd wipe the pests from my face with my hand and on the opposite side of my hand my face was covered again. I started to freak out. I pushed the eccelerator forward and gave it some gas. All the while slapping at the bugs. Gary immediately lowers the gas from downstairs and comes up the stairs asking me what I'm doing. Again the bugs attacked and I started stood slapping and screaming (not very loud) down the stairs explaining that I just couldn't drive from upstairs any longer. Gary sped up the boat and continued driving from upstairs. Grrrrrrrrrr

We entered Mullica River and started heading toward our weekend refuge. Strong weather on Sat and the weekend boaters made stopping off in New Gretna NJ with our friends Bill n Diane D VERY appealing. After all we started our trip with New Gretna in it, its only right. We won't get to VIKING Yachting center till the am. No sense in paying 40. bucks to pull in and sleep. So we anchored out near the opening of Great Bay. Would you believe we had to drive around for 30 minutes trying to find shallow water to anchor in! Gary wasn't interested in dropping 50 feet of anchor chain + scope in 50 feet of water and having to pull it all up again in the morning. Can't say that I blame him.

Diane D called and suggested that I make up a grocery list of things we need for the weekend. It's cheaper in PA where they live. I thought that was a great idea and went about that task.
We look forward to seeing them.

PS Don't tell Diane that GARY dropped the electric fry pan in the drink.

June 8th THE COAST GUARD BOARDING

I was down below starting to straighten out the cabin, when I heard Gary's voice. It sounded like he was talking to someone closeby and seeing as how we were underway, I thought I'd go check it out. There next to the VICTORIA was the Coast Guard boat. They were greeting us and asking a couple of questions. For lack of knowing their names Ill call them Big, Tall and Driver. Sorry guys. Big says something like, "I'm just gonna come on board and check your paperwork and things" I had just come out and heard this and said,"Are you sure you guys wanna come on board right now........I haven't had a chance to tidy up yet!!" We all laughed and they instructed Gary to keep up his motoring speed while they walked from their boat to ours. I started getting the paperwork for Tall, and gave Big a tour of the head and flares etc. Driver stayed close with the CG Boat (an amazing vessel) Coming up the stairs Big got himself free from the door jam (kidding) and we went back outside where I saw a perfect opportunity for a photo shoot! ! ! First I asked if they minded and within like 5 minutes we were done. At first , not knowing what to expect I have to admit I was a little nervous. However these three cuties (no disrespect intended) handled themselves professionally yet personable. All in all I'd say that it was a positive experience with the Coast Guard. Thanks Guys.

Good morning everyone!!

Praise GOD!! Its' not raining and there is no wind. We are happy about this. The gnats are horrible but you have to take the good with the bad.

While in Cape May NJ we went to WAWA which is an excellent local store in NJ. They also do not charge you for ATM cash withdrawal. Gary and I walked alot while Brittany is focused on finishing out the school year.

We returned to our favorite haunt in Cape May, the C View Inn. The best chicken wings anywhere! On Wed nights , it's .25 cents a wing. So on Wednesday Gary and I dragged 3 bored sailors with us and had a great time. Patrice, Robert and Jean took the rest of the afternoon to provision a little and explore Cape May. Gary and I walked in the other direction and went back to the boat. We checked on Britt and then walked over the bridge to pick up a few things and head back to the boat again.

Oh, here's a side note. When we were in Brunswick Landing Georgia, there was a cruisers BBQ planned one night. While Gary was washing dishes he grabbed the electric frypan by the handle and held it over the side of the boat to hose it off.
The handle had previously been broken when the pan fell, while we were getting waked. Anyway, the power of the hose tore the pan out of his hand unexpectantly and it fell in the drink. He was left with the pan handle in his hand and a shocked look on his face. The pan was never to be seen again. Very sad. Very sad indeed.
